Passage 2
A car is made up of more than 30,000 parts. Each part in a new car is as weak as a baby. So a new car requires proper care and servicing. If you're unfamiliar with the parts, you have to read through the owner's instructions carefully.
First of all, the brakes (刹车) of your car are important for safety reasons. Having them checked regularly can reduce the risks of accidents. Another important thing to consider is engine care. Always remember that the life and performance of your car engine depend on the engine oil. Replace the engine oil when recommended. If you feel the engine is very hot especially during summer it is probably because the cooling system doesn't work well. You'd better get the cooling system serviced before the start of summer.
In a word, timely and proper servicing is an important task for car owners. Good servicing can not only extend the life of your newborn baby, but also ensure your safety, and the safety of those who share the road with you.
51、 To get familiar with the parts of a new car, the owner should ______.
A. regard the car as a new-born baby
B. have the car serviced before driving it
C. read through the instructions carefully

55、 The last paragraph tells us that the purpose of carefully servicing a car is ______.
A. to let you sell your car at a good price
B. to extend its life and ensure safety
C. to reduce the cost of car servicing
D. to make the car run faster
Passage 3
In the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, mostly married. The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have
now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago—so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction.
The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on cooperation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. It probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.
56、 According to the passage, the U. S. elementary education is supposed to make children ______.
A. sensible and sensitive B. competitive and interested
C. curious and friendly D. happy and cooperative
57、 Some Americans complain about elementary schools because they think ______.
A. children are reluctant to help each other
B. schools lay too much emphasis on cooperation
C. children should grow up with competitive ideas
D. schools give little actual instruction to children
58、 The author's attitude towards American education can be best described as ______.
A. favorable B. negative
C. tolerant D. unfriendly
59、 The American educational system emphasizes ______.
A. material wealth B. competition
C. cooperation D. personal benefit
60、 The word \"sociable\" (Paragraph 2) most probably means ______.
A. fond of talking freely B. friendly with other people
C. concerned about social welfare D. happy at school
Passage 4
During the twentieth century there has been a great change in the lives of women. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four of five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which chance and health made it unusual for them to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman's
youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until sixty.
This important change in women's life has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school and took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life.
61、 We are told that in a family about 1900 ______.
A. few children died before they were five
B. seven or eight children lived to be more than five
C. the youngest child would be fifteen
D. not all the children can live beyond five
62、 One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she ______.
A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselves
B. does not like children herself
C. needn't worry about food for her children
D. can be free from family duties when she reaches sixty
63、 Many girls are now likely to ______.
A. give up their jobs for good after they are married
B. leave school as soon as they can
C. marry so that they can get a job
D. continue working until they are going to have a baby
64、 According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ______.
A. stay at home after leaving school B. marry men younger than themselves
C. start working again later in life D. marry while still at school
65、 Now a husband probably ______.
A. plays a greater part in looking after the children
B. helps his wife by doing most of the housework
C. feels dissatisfied with his part in the family
D. takes a part-time job so that he can be more helpful at home

Part Ⅳ Translation
Directions: You are required to read the following passage and translate the underlined sentences into Chinese. Remember to write your translation in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.
There are many ways to learn about people of other lands. 71 One way is to study the clothing other people wear. 72 For thousands of years, people in different part of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this.
One reason might be religion. 73 In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils(面纱) to hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion.
74 The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton.
75 The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs.
76 World-wide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.
