Fifteen volunteers have come out a difficult situation from a cave (洞穴) in the southwest of France after spending 40 days without clocks, phones, or sunlight for a human isolation experiment. The group had no communication with the outside world and was not able to use any electronic devices.
Eight men and seven women were grouped to live in the cave as part of a $ 1.4 million project called Deep Time, which set out to explore the limits of human ability to gradually change their behaviour and attitudes in the new situation. The experiment ended after 40 days.
During their time in the cave, the volunteers slept in tents and made their own electricity with a bike since there was no natural light. They also got water from a well (井) 146 feet below the earth. Since there was no sunlight, the team had to follow their biological clocks to know when to sleep, eat, or do daily tasks. To no one’s surprise, they quickly lost their sense of time.
One of the volunteers said he thought he had been underground for 23 days. Another volunteer said he ran 10-kilometer circles in the cave to stay fit. And he couldn’t wait to leave the cave. But other volunteers felt differently, with two-thirds saying they wanted to stay in the cave for longer. Some even thought it was as if they could press pause and stop to live.
During their time in the cave, scientists carefully watched and checked the volunteers including their sleeping patterns, social activities and cognitive functions (认知功能). The experiment will help scientists understand how human brains can help people adapt (适应) to serious living conditions in new situations. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

As a young man, Tom was a skilled potter (陶工). He had a wife and two sons. But one night, his oldest son died of a sudden illness. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his 6-year-old son. The pain was more than Tom could stand, and he drank too much. In time, Tom became an alcoholic (酗酒者).
Day by day, Tom began to lose everything he had—his home, his job, his art, everything. In the end, Tom died alone in a hotel room. When I heard of Tom’s death, I thought, “What a complete failure!”
As time went by, Tom’s son Ernie grew up. He is one of the kindest and most caring men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn’t heard Ernie talk much about his father. It is so hard to stand up for an alcoholic. One day I asked him, “I’m really puzzled by something,” I said. “I know your father was basically the only one to raise you. What on earth did he do that you became such a good person?”
Ernie sat quietly for a while. Then he said, “From my earliest memories as a child until I left home at 18, Tom came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘I love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Tom as a failure. He had not left any material wealth (物质财富) behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and he left behind one of the finest men I have ever known. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。

Smartphones have become an important and necessary part of our daily lives. However, the overuse of smartphones may cause younger students’ eye problems and stop them paying attention to their studies.
In China, primary and middle school have had more rules to limit students’ mobile phone use at school since January. Those who require their phones for some reasons must get their parents’ and teachers’ emission (允许) and hand their phones over during class time, in some schools, there is a box out of the classroom for specially storing students’ phones. This is obviously good for improving students’ focus on study and fighting addiction (瘾) to the internet.
According to a repot, China had 175 million internet users under the age of 18 in 2019, with 74 percent having their own mobile phones. This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, neck and even the brain. Besides, spending too much time on the phone will take their attention away and prevent them from learning.
